Cote’s Weblog

About Coté

Hello, I’m Michael Coté. But, please, just call me “Coté”: (1.) everyone else does, and, (2.) there are too many other Michael’s in this world to get confused with.

If you’re not interested in learning who I am solely from my weblog, or want a little help, here’s the scoop:

My Family and City

On the board-walk in Long Beach, WA

I’m married to the lovely Ms. Kimberly Skotak. We don’t have kids yet, but we’ve got a passel of dogs and cats (two each).

I was born in Austin, Texas, and I still live here. I may be a leftist whack-job, but I’m a proud Texan first.

Work

I’m an industry analyst with RedMonk. You can check out my RedMonk bio. My “work blog” is PeopleOverProcess.com.

Previous to RedMonk, I was a developer at BMC Software at the Austin campus. My primary work was developing the BMC Performance Manager (né PATROLExpress), a web application for doing agentless network and web-site monitoring.

A long time ago I helped start an online banking company, now known as FundsXpress. Even longer ago, as a precursor to FundsXpress, I helped start one of the first on-line malls at VRCO/Mesa Internet Systems. Much of those years

are “documented” written about in my “FX Pages”.

I’ve also worked at The Cobalt Group, Liaison Technologies, Coral Technologies (see Coral Quotes), and a few of my own projects, such as Acorro.

You can read more about my profesional like in my resume, or check out my LinkedIn profile.

Content is King

In San Sebastian

Since the days of Mosiac and gopher I’ve been playing around with the Internet, and there’s plenty of my old crap laying around here. Now-a-days, being the slave to the ‘net that I am, most of my efforts are put into my weblog and, more recently, my photos.

I like zombies too. and ajax. Your last podcast reminded me that I hadn’t yet seen land of the dead. I am watching it now.

  3. Cote' Says:

I hope you enjoy Land of the Dead. Hopfully you’ve seen the other Romero Zombie movies so that you get a nice rounding out feel.

    Hi Cote…

Great website. Can I e-mail you some questions about the Clairtone catalog? Thanks for putting it online - it’s great.

    Geoff

  5. Robin Says:

Manning & reviewers were full of beans. I’m working on some application authorization frameworks, and it seems to me I’d be crazy to roll my own when JAAS is so extensible.

Many thanks for the excellent publication.

  6. Cote' Says:

I’m glad you’ve liked the book. I’d love to hear more about how you’re using JAAS ;)

  7. Alexandre Poitras Says:

Just out of curiosity, do you have french canadian heritage? Because Coté is a pretty common name in Québec.

  8. Cote' Says:

Yes I do. My dad’s side of the family, I’m told, is from Québec. But that was several generations ago, so I don’t really have ties or any family that I know about up there.

  9. Chris Dalby Says:

    Keep rustlin’ that beard ;)

  10. Avarwaen Says:

It’s definitely French-Canadian. Moved from France to Canada to be fur trappers, or so I’m told. I share the same last name with you, but I’m up in Wisconsin.

    Cote, Charles,

I want to install linux on my intel PC, but I’m confused about the relative merits of the differnent distributions.

I’m wanting to do some java development and run an oracle database. Which distribution do you recommend.

    Still loving the podcast.

    Regards,

    Matt.

  12. Cote' Says:

I’d go with Ubuntu for now since I’ve heard so many good things about it. I think it’ll work out well for Java + Oracle development…given that Oracle support it.

If not, go for something that Oracle supports: I don’t know off the top of my head.

[…] A while back I blogged about a Citizen Journalism Unconference that I attended. Coté’s interest was piqued and he invited me to join him for a podcast on the matter. A few weeks later, it happened. […]
