[DrunkAndRetired.com Podcast] Episode 52 - Cory’s Question

In this episode, we answer three questions from Cory about virus scanners, spy-ware blockers, programming, and operating systems. Thanks for all the questions!

You may be wondering, where is episode 51? Good question, dear readers! Charles is still editing that episode. It’s chock full of The Front Side goodness.

  1. Cory C Says:

Hey guys. Thx for answering my questions. I like the way you guys professionally answered my questions. Thanks so much

  2. Aaron 'Jomdom' Ransley Says:

Charles! He is suffocating again! Are you guys broadcasting from a pillow fortress?

I loved how Charles revealed his latent surfer-dude personality at the beginning of the show ;-)

  3. Pete F Says:

Long Squeak bet: Negroponte’s $100 laptop ships with Squeak. Five years later Java and .Net are washed away by ten million highly motivated Smalltalkers who will work for ten bucks a day and have impeccable OO instincts.

  4. Chris Nokleberg Says:

Hi guys. In the last week I have listened to every episode in order, and now I am going through withdrawal.

I forget which episode it was, but Charles was having problems with finalize and at the time it crossed my mind that he might want to look into PhantomReferences.

Also, it was never revealed what Kim (?) was eating–the tupperware with white chewy things. Leaving listeners hanging like that doesn’t score many points of awesome. Before you reply…save it for the podcast!

  5. Cote' Says:

We’ll try to remember to reveal what was in the tupperware. My memory is foggy.

  6. Charles Lowell Says:

    Chris,

I’m all about HardReferences, SoftReferences, and WeakReferences, but when to use Phantom References is something that I’ve never come across. Probably because it’s so hard to tell what the hell they even are from the javadoc. I came away thinking, this phantom reference is useless, but I could be wrong. Maybe you’d like to come on the show and explain all about Phantom References.

  7. Pete F Says:

    (10 months pass)

OK -so i was wrong (above) on Squeak being on the $100 laptop (although i have since seen a photo somewhere of it running on the olpc hardware).

    My revised bet is therefore:

Negroponte’s $100 laptop ships with PYTHON. Five years later Java and .Net are washed away by ten million highly motivated PYTHONISTAS who will work for ten bucks a day and have impeccable OO instincts AND PRAGMATISM.

Also -i think squeak came up as a possible answer to Cory’s “what language should i learn” question, and I don’t think Python was suggested. Python seems to appeal to learners, and alpha geeks (people in the middle love that static typing) so if Cory is either then Python is probably perfect. He might also enjoy the Python 411 “computer programming for everyone” podcast.

    Pete F

for the record, i’m certain i am not Cory -but just in case, i am going to leave a hair, here on the keyboard -that way i will know if in fact i am Cory, but don’t know it, and am posting in my sleep

  8. Martin Dawes Says:

Squeak *is* on the olpc - http://laptop.org/laptop/software/specs.shtml - so I think Java and .Net will be washed away by ten million highly motivated Squeakers and Pythonistas who have impeccable OO instincts, are dynamic and elegant, and will work for ten bucks a day.
