The point of the question is to think about if “a sound” is the sound waves, or the interpretation of those sound waves by our ears.

(Note to non-technical audiences: garbage collection is a real “computer thing” where as bread and elves are not.) Anyway, Charles was talking about the problems he’d been having with interfacing a Java program he’s developing with an external system. Essentially, the external system frees its memory at, shall we say, inopportune moments, leading to errors in Charles’s program. However, earlier in the podcast there was a discussion about garbage collection — the Java way of memory management — versus reference counting — the Microsoft COM and Mozilla XPCOM way of doing things.
